Accounting programs at our Minneapolis location

We offer four accounting programs at our downtown Minneapolis college. Whether you are seeking a bachelor’s degree and eligibility to take the CPA exam or want to enter the workforce more quickly with a diploma, you can find a program at GU/MSB that will meet your needs.

Our accounting degrees include the following:

Bachelor of Science in Accounting (BS). This four-year degree program (although many students complete the program in less time) prepares students to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam in Minnesota. Among occupations that require bachelor’s degrees, accounting is generally thought to have the most job opportunities. It is a well-paid field and offers many chances for advancement. Students who take CPA or ACAT exams are encouraged to apply for our Professional Certification Scholarship to defray the costs of the exams.

Associate in Applied Science in Accounting and Tax Specialist (AAS). This two-year degree prepares students for opportunities as tax advisors, owners of tax preparation services and accounting jobs in companies of all types and sizes. It also provides a base from which to earn a BS degree in accounting.

Associate in Applied Science in Management Accounting (AAS). This AAS degree prepares students for positions as payables/receivables specialists, payroll technicians, accounting assistants and billing specialists. Graduates with this degree can return to earn a bachelor’s degree and transfer many credits toward their next credential.

Diploma in Accounting.  Students may complete this technical diploma in as few as twelve months of full-time study. They are prepared for positions as bookkeepers, payroll clerks and specialists in accounts payable and acconts receivable. And if they wish  to pursue additional education at a later date, they are able to return to school to earn an associate or bachelor's degree in one of our accounting programs. They will find that many of their diploma credits transfer smoothly to the new program.

Credit for prior learning and work experience

If you have previous education, training or work experience in accounting, you may qualify to receive college credit for prior learning. This can reduce the amount of time required for you to earn an accounting degree and start you on your career more quickly. Students in AAS and BS accounting programs can receive credit for up to 75% of required courses; unlike many other schools, we do not charge tuition for these credits. Our credit transfer policies make it possible to earn our accounting BS degree more quickly and at lower cost. Contact our education department to learn more about the process.

Online options available

We offer all our accounting programs online. This means that students are able to complete their degrees in the evenings after work, on weekends or whenever their schedules permit. There is no need to find a sitter, pay for the bus or gas, or find a parking space. Our strong support system for online learners provides answers to students’ questions and encourages interaction among students and faculty.
