Criminal justice — a growing field

People with training in criminal justice are in demand. The prison population in Minnesota has increased greatly over the past 25 years. Changes in society have resulted in new positions in court systems, such as child advocate and victims’ rights advocate. There are many law enforcement jobs, such as those in airport security, that were non-existent 10 years ago.

A CJ degree is a solid foundation

A degree in criminal justice will be valuable for many years to come. You will be eligible for interesting and challenging positions. You will also be positioned for career advancement and will be well-prepared to return to college for a bachelors degree. You will also be prepared for the additional training required by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board to become a police officer.

Career opportunities for graduates of our criminal justice program

Upon completion of our program, graduates may be eligible for positions such as:

  • Private detective
  • Transportation and security administration (TSA) screening officer
  • Private security guard
  • Police officer candidate*
  • State patrol officer candidate*
  • Deputy sheriff candidate*

Available online or in class

Our criminal justice AAS degree is available online so that students with busy lives and complicated schedules can complete their college educations. We support our distance learners by providing a strong support system that includes a well-staffed online help desk, tutorials, training sessions, IM, chat and e-mail. Students can also take some classes online and others at our downtown Minneapolis location or any of our 11 other campuses in the upper Midwest.

Our degree program includes classes in criminal justice topics such as the following:

In addition to these and other core requirements, students also take 30 credits of general education courses and eight credits of electives. The total program credit requirement is 91 credits. An AAS degree in criminal justice can be completed in 18 months of full-time study.
